I am a junior Bioengineering major at the University of Maryland College Park campus and graduated from Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ. I have tutored part-time extensively over the past few years, starting with mathematics for elementary and middle school students at the Brick Avon Academy in Newark, NJ, and since then have worked privately with students on a variety of subjects. I am proficient in a wide range of subjects primarily centered on the biological sciences and mathematics. With that said, my favorite subject to tutor for is test preparations for the ACT and SAT as although the exams are rigorous, there is a definite method for learning to take the tests and improving performance. Helping students through these stressful exams is highly rewarding as there is a very tangible benefit from proper studying for these tests and seeing my students excel is something that I strive for. I have found the best way to teach in a one on one environment is to connect with my students and through personalized attention find out where their strengths and weaknesses lie, then to work with them to build a foundation around their weak areas to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the subject material. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy an active lifestyle; through high school I was a sprinter on the track team, played for our varsity soccer club, and even played club rugby for two years. Since then I resigned to less demanding sports due to time commitments but still play for intramural teams at my college as well as taking time out to hike or kayak with friends as often as I can.

What motivates me most is seeing my student’s progress through our strong collaborative effort. I like to first understand the objectives of my students as well as their strengths, weaknesses and individual learning style. From there I plan lessons that can shore up any weaknesses and build further upon established strengths. Whether speaking, listening, reading, writing or a combination of these is our focus, I like to incorporate a highly interactive approach to learning. Hello! I am a current graduate student in an Applied Mathematics program and an experienced tutor. I recently graduated from Elon University, where I earned my Bachelors in both Mathematics and Religious Studies. Throughout high school and college I have tutored math to many different students - these students range from 2nd graders to nontraditional adult students. I have previously tutored elementary and middle school math, algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, and even math covered on standardized testing such as the ACT/SAT. Aside from tutoring many students over several years, I have also worked as an English teaching assistant on a Fulbright grant in Sri Lanka. During this experience, I really learned how to interact with different students and hold a class on my own. Currently, I am a calculus teaching assistant and math tutor at UMD where I am able to gain teaching experience every week.In my free time, I love watching sports and listening to music. Not only are these two things that I love, but I actually completed two research projects in college focused on math and music and math and sports. One of the reasons I love math is because it can be applied to almost anything. Showing students how math can be applied to the real world and how it can be useful in their own lives really helps students stay engaged with the course material.I personally think that any student can do well in their math class with the right help and I am very committed to delivering the best experience possible to each and every student. I am always very patient with students as I understand that learning math can take time and I am prepared to cater to different learning styles. As a future educator I am committed to creating individualized and meaningful teaching experiences for each of my students. I am a recent graduate from the University of Maryland and am working in the interim between no and when my graduate program starts in the fall. I plan to be a high school art teacher as I find that art lends itself to the more difficult subjects to breach including social issues. By opening up these conversations and teaching students to remain open minded during them I hope to shape the next generation into critically thinking empathetic members of our community.

With such a low percentage of Black doctors in the U.S, I hope to provide a role model figure for youth outside of just a sports player or musician. I want to give hope to them, but also inspire people of all races to pursue their dreams despite their obstacles and despite discouragement. I enjoy tutoring and teaching in general because it allows me to impart my knowledge on other people and hopefully make an impact on a young person that will inspire them to love the subject and spark an interest that can turn into a beloved career for them.
