Initially, I'd only decided to do it because my high school offered two free years of community college upon the completion of 50 hours of peer tutoring. However, as I spent time with my peers who were taking much of the sa...

Having completed a B.S in biology from Lindenwood University and a B.S. and M.S in Geology from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, I have a strong background in the sciences. As a graduate teaching assistant and as an education intern, I have had teaching experience in formal and informal settings with elementary to college age students. My broad scientific background allows me to teach subjects from different perspectives if a student has difficulty understanding information based on the manner it is presented. My preferred subjects to teach are biology (general and ecology) and geological/ earth sciences. These subjects are often far reaching and intertwine with other areas bringing a large amount of the sciences into a cohesive whole. My teaching style varies according to the students needs. If I am presenting a new subject, I provide a base amount of knowledge and see how that sinks in. Then I will ask questions which will test understanding and will lead students to the implications of the subject. If a student comes to me with difficulties understanding a topic, I will ascertain the students understanding of the topic, correct misinterpretations, and fill in gaps in his or her knowledge. In both cases, I will often draw graphs or diagrams, building them with the lecture. This provides the student with a visual representation of the topic and a step by step walkthrough. A difficulty in the sciences is often dealing with definitions. One of the most successful ways I have of dealing with this is to break the words down into their roots, explain where the roots com from, and how the prefixes and suffixes alter the meaning. My personal hobbies include reading and video games.

I first began tutoring and mentoring students in early high school, when I got my black belt in a Korean martial art called Kuk Sool Won. I discovered that I enjoyed sharing something that I was passionate about with the younger students, and helping them to improve. Once I went to college and my former students entered high school, I started to share my passion in math and science with them as well. Beyond scholastic achievement, math and science allow one to understand the world we live in, and the more you learn, the more the inherent structure, beauty and interconnectedness of the natural world appear to become self-evident.As a tutor, I try to show my students why what they're learning matters, and how it can enrich their view of the world, even if they think they will never apply what they're learning in their day to day lives. The primary issue in most students is motivation, and motivation is much easier to find once they understand why they are learning what they're learning. Now, as a Biomedical Engineer, I actually have the ability to improve the world by applying my scientific understanding to problems faced by doctors and nurses, hopefully making their lives easier, as well as improving patient outcomes.I have a Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering, as well as a Masters in Engineering, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math, science, engineering and German. Outside of work, I enjoy dancing Salsa and Bachata, doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and computer programming.

Educational Background:Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, with Minor in Mathematics - May 1993Washington University, St. LouisMaster of Science in Chemistry - June 1995University of California, RiversideTeacher Education Program - June 1996University of California, RiversideTeaching Credentials earned in California (1996), Ohio (2003) and Missouri (2012).---------------------------------------------------I have been teaching in public high schools since the 1995 - 1996 school year, and I love what I do. I enjoy the subjects I teach, and I work hard to impart that excitement into my classes. I get a thrill when I see the light bulb go on as my students master a tough concept.I expect the best from my pupils, and I provide the support and encouragement they need to succeed. I routinely challenge my students and push them just outside of their comfort zone for this is where they will experience the most growth. I ask my students to problem solve, to consider, to participate and to THINK.For students who need extra support in mastering a new skill, I provide plenty of time for questions before, during and after school. While I will not be your student's classroom teacher, I can offer your child the time he or she needs to review work, ask questions, practice skills or prepare for an assessment.

I am an MD/MBA student at WashU School of Medicine. I am finishing up my last year of medical school and wanted to use my free time to do something that I love, which is teaching students. I have tutored since I was in high school and love the challenge of helping students understand and master their course material. Over time, I have developed numerous techniques to help my students get the most out of my sessions so they can excel in whatever subject matter they are struggling with.

I grew up in Houston, TX and received my Bachelors degree in theHistory of Art and Architecture from Boston University. Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to teach in diverse environments including both public and charter schools and art museums and galleries. Being a visual person myself, I find that learning can be a lot of fun when you are able to situate yourself in the setting of a certain subject matter. Want to know about ancient Egypt? Imagine what it would be like to be among the pharaohs and slaves by taking a video tour of a pyramid tomb. Struggling with vocabulary? Try discovering the etymology of words by taking a look at some Latin manuscripts written by monks centuries ago! As you can see, I like to draw in a lot of historic visual references to help learning a lot more dynamic and exciting.I love teaching others about the subjects that mean the most to me: history and the English language. I find It is important to learn about the mistakes and triumphs of the past in order to understand how our actions today can have a positive or negative impact in the future. And I truly believe that effective communication is key in every aspect of life, from getting to know other people, to being able to evaluate situations intelligently, and spreading worthwhile ideas, both verbally and in written form.Even though I find learning a lot of fun, I do get out from time to time, too. On my days off I like to read sci-fi novels, play the bass guitar, and bounce around Kansas City's awesome coffeeshops and art galleries.

I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with a Biochemistry concentration. My personal and academic backgrounds have fueled my passion for effective education, which I believe can impart both knowledge and interest to a student. As such, I have worked as a tutor at Kumon for over 4 years, teaching students of all ages and watching them grow and succeed. My college peers often sought my help to parse difficult concepts into understandable pieces and to offer intuitive approaches to problems. I treat teaching and learning as an exercise of clear, open communication; the better the communication, the more appropriate the pace of learning, the greater the understanding between the teacher and student, and the more comfortable the learning experience becomes. With the sciences fresh on my mind and confidence about test preparation, I plan to tutor mathematics (up to Calculus AB), biology, chemistry, physics, and the SAT. But even I need to catch a break from the academic scene at times, which I love to fill with cooking, baking, and running!
