How to Collect Blood the Right Way

Mastering the technique of specimen collection is at the heart of phlebotomy. This includes choosing the right vein, using the correct equipment, and following each step with care.

Steps in Venipuncture

  1. Identify and verify the patient.
  2. Select and clean the puncture site.
  3. Apply a tourniquet and select a vein.
  4. Insert the needle at the correct angle.
  5. Collect the required amount of blood.
  6. Remove the needle and apply pressure.

Types of Blood Collection

  • Venipuncture: Drawing blood from a vein, usually in the arm.
  • Capillary puncture: Using a lancet to collect blood from a fingertip or heel.

Equipment Used

  • Needles and syringes
  • Vacutainer tubes
  • Tourniquets
  • Alcohol swabs

Examples

  • Using a butterfly needle for a patient with small veins.

  • Choosing a fingerstick for a quick glucose test.
