Study Strategies

Monitoring Comprehension

Check if You Understand

Good readers stop and think while they read. Ask yourself, 'Does this make sense?' If not, go back and reread, look for clues, or ask for help. Monitoring comprehension means making sure you understand as you go.

Why Monitor?

This helps you remember more and enjoy reading, because you’re not confused or lost!

Examples

  • Pausing after a paragraph to ask yourself what happened.

  • Rereading a tricky sentence to make sure you understand it.
