Understanding Vocabulary in Context
What is Vocabulary in Context?
Sometimes you find a word you don't know. You can figure it out by looking at the words and sentences around it—this is called using context clues!
How to Use Context Clues
- Look for definitions or explanations nearby.
- Find examples or synonyms in the sentence.
- Pay attention to pictures or illustrations.
Why It's Helpful
Learning new words helps you become a better reader and writer. You’ll also feel more confident when you see unfamiliar words on tests.
Real-World Uses
Understanding words in context helps you follow instructions, read signs, and learn new things every day.
Examples
The word 'enormous' is next to 'very big,' so you know it means 'huge.'
If a character is 'timid' and hides behind someone, you know 'timid' means 'shy.'
