Identifying Author's Purpose

What is the Author's Purpose?

The author's purpose is the reason they wrote the text. Authors usually want to persuade, inform, or entertain you—sometimes called PIE!

  • Persuade: Try to get you to do or believe something.
  • Inform: Give you facts or teach you something new.
  • Entertain: Tell a story or make you laugh.

How to Figure Out the Purpose

  • Look at the type of writing—story, article, ad, or letter?
  • Pay attention to the words and tone.
  • Ask, "What does the author want me to do or feel?"

Why It Matters

Knowing the author’s purpose helps you understand the message and decide if you agree with it.

Real-World Uses

You can spot author's purpose in books, commercials, signs, and even songs!

Examples

  • A story about a superhero is written to entertain.

  • A book about recycling is written to inform.
