I am a discerning, highly motivated individual who is passionate about providing an outstanding learning experience for middle school, high school, and college students. I am a sophomore at St. Louis Community College Meramec and will be obtaining an Associates of Arts in Teaching next semester.I have two years experience tutoring sixth through eighth grade through the A+ Tutoring Program. I have tutored at-risk students, students struggling in specific subjects, those with special learning needs, and those in the gifted program. I am more than comfortable tutoring all core classes at the middle school level.While in high school I studied rigorously for my ACT while applying to various colleges. I improved my initial score by five points, scoring a 31 composite. Because of my experience and success with the test, coupled with my understanding of critical concepts and important test skills, I am excited to pass on my ACT knowledge to current high school students! I also have ample experience with the college admissions process and the scholarship application process. I am quite capable assisting high school students in their core classes as well. I've done well in math classes my whole life and that trend has continued into college. Throughout my math career, reaching out to people for help has been critical to my learning.I have tutored students since junior year of high school and have refined my teaching methods from all of my sessions. My degrees from SUNY include a Bachelor in special education and a Masters in Education in reading. Prior to my SUNY experience I studied at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York and earned an associates degree in music.I am now a retired special education teacher (as of July 1, 2015) from the Saranac Lake Central School District in northern New York State - but I still want to be productive and helpful! Most of my education career was spent teaching elementary students as a consultant teacher, 15:1 (alternative education) teacher, resource room teacher, and teaching small groups inside and outside the general education classroom. I also spent two summers teaching inmates skills needed to attain their GED skills at a medium security facility; this was a real learning about life experience for me. I have also taught piano lessons throughout my teaching career, and have always looked for ways to teach and enhance academics through music and the arts.My favorite subjects to tutor are reading and writing. Reading is the key to accessing information and one vital pathway to experience inspiration. Writing compliments reading and can be an important means of self expression, like singing, playing an instrument, engagement in the visual arts, dancing or theater.My teaching philosophy is to determine the students' interests and strengths and teach to that. I want to individualize instruction for each student to that end, while making sure we're progressing toward our academic goals and objectives. If frustration occurs, I determine the source and find ways to improve the situation. Learning should always be a satisfying experience that increases self esteem.Outside of teaching, my other interests include playing jazz piano, and I have played with many combinations of musicians over the years. I opened and expanded an International Baccalaureate program at John A. Ferguson HS, where I became an IB certified teacher, later on training and supervising 16 teachers in 8 different languages offered at the school. I taught and led an ESL department in Boston, MA for two years; where I also got an active certification in Spanish k-12. I published a short, bilingual story dedicated to my late father in June 2012. I now live in the Orlando area with my husband Jose and our dog, Harry.

Being an English major at Wingate University has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I have had, and it has influenced me to want to help others enjoy the language and literary materials that are available in the world as much as I enjoy them. English can be a difficult subject for some and I want to help them understand the difficulties, as well as enjoy the wonders embedded in various literature. Of course there is literature that can be dry, but there is so much out there that is wonderful and engaging. You just have to look for it. The English language is one of the most difficult languages to understand, but approaching it from a different perspective is what helps it make sense. My goal is to apply language to everyday use, which is the tactic that seems to help others grasp harder concepts. It can be challenging, but that is half the fun when it comes to English. There is so much potential waiting to be attained. You only have to listen to someone speak or open a book to begin understanding and appreciating English.
