Using Context Clues to Learn New Words

What are Context Clues?

Context clues are hints in a sentence or paragraph that help you figure out the meaning of a new word.

Types of Clues

  • Definition: The word is explained right after.
  • Example: The sentence gives an example.
  • Synonym/Antonym: A similar or opposite word is used nearby.

How to Use Them

  • Reread the sentence or paragraph.
  • Look for hints around the word.
  • Try to guess the meaning before looking it up.

Why it Matters

This skill helps you become a better reader and learn new words faster.

Examples

  • Figuring out ‘frigid’ means cold from the sentence: ‘The frigid air made everyone shiver.’

  • Learning ‘generous’ means giving by reading: ‘She shared her lunch with everyone; she was generous.’
