Study Strategies

Previewing and Predicting

Before You Read

Previewing means looking over the text before you start reading. Check out the title, pictures, headings, and any bold words. This gives you a hint about what the text will be about!

Predicting

Make a guess about what you think will happen or what you’ll learn. As you read, check if your predictions were right.

Why Use This Strategy?

It helps you stay focused and excited to read. Plus, you’ll remember more because your brain is getting ready for what’s coming.

Examples

  • Looking at the chapter title and guessing what the story will be about.

  • Seeing a picture of a volcano and predicting the article will talk about eruptions.
