4th Grade Math
Fractions, decimals, and geometric concepts for fourth grade students.
Basic Concepts
Shapes and Geometry Basics
What is Geometry?
Geometry is the study of shapes and their properties. We see shapes all around us, from triangles in road signs to rectangles in books!
Common 2D Shapes
- Square: Four equal sides and four right angles
- Rectangle: Opposite sides are equal and four right angles
- Triangle: Three sides and three angles
- Circle: All points are the same distance from the center
Perimeter and Area
- Perimeter is the distance around a shape.
- Area is the amount of space inside a shape.
Why Study Geometry?
Geometry helps us design, build, and understand the world around us. Architects, artists, and engineers use geometry every day!
Real-World Uses
- Drawing or cutting paper into different shapes
- Building a fence around a garden (perimeter)
- Decorating a room with wallpaper (area)
Examples
Finding the area of your rectangular desk to see how much space you have for your books.
Measuring the perimeter of a playground to know how much fencing is needed.
In a Nutshell
Geometry is about understanding shapes, their properties, and measurements.
