Adding and Subtracting Fractions
How Do We Add or Subtract Fractions?
To add or subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator. This is called a common denominator.
- If denominators are the same, just add or subtract the numerators.
- If denominators are different, find a common denominator first.
Steps for Adding Fractions
- Check if denominators are the same.
- If not, find a common denominator.
- Add the numerators.
- Keep the denominator the same.
Steps for Subtracting Fractions
- Make denominators the same.
- Subtract the numerators.
- Keep the denominator the same.
Why Is This Useful?
Adding and subtracting fractions helps with cooking, building, and sharing things equally!
Real-World Uses
- Adding ingredient amounts in a recipe
- Sharing snacks between friends
Examples
Adding \( \frac{1}{4} + \frac{2}{4} = \frac{3}{4} \).
Subtracting \( \frac{3}{5} - \frac{1}{5} = \frac{2}{5} \).
In a Nutshell
Add or subtract fractions by making their denominators the same.
