3rd Grade Science

Investigating ecosystems, matter, and energy through hands-on experiments and observations.

Basic Concepts

Sources and Forms of Energy

What is Energy?

Energy is what makes things happen. It helps us move, keeps us warm, and makes our lights shine!

Different Forms of Energy

  • Light energy: From the sun or a lamp.
  • Heat energy: From fire, the sun, or even your body.
  • Sound energy: From music or someone talking.
  • Motion energy: When something moves, like a rolling ball.

Where Does Energy Come From?

  • The Sun: Our biggest source of energy! It gives us light and heat.
  • Food: Gives our bodies energy to grow, think, and play.
  • Electricity: Powers our homes, schools, and devices.

Hands-On Energy

  • Use a flashlight to see how light energy helps you see in the dark.
  • Jump up and down to feel how your body uses energy from food.

Examples

  • The sun warms your face at the park (light and heat energy).

  • A radio uses electricity to play music (sound energy).

In a Nutshell

Energy comes in many forms and is needed for everything to work and move.
