Basic Scientific Inquiry

What is Scientific Inquiry?

Scientific inquiry is a way to ask questions and find answers about the world around us. It’s how scientists discover new things!

Steps of Scientific Inquiry

  1. Ask a Question: Wonder about something, like “How do plants grow?”
  2. Make a Guess (Hypothesis): Think about what might happen.
  3. Do an Experiment: Test your idea. Maybe plant seeds in different places.
  4. Watch What Happens: Observe and take notes.
  5. Talk About What You Learned: Share your results with others.

Why is it Important?

This process helps everyone learn new things, solve problems, and make discoveries, big or small!

Try It Yourself

You can be a scientist at home or school by asking questions, trying things out, and noticing what happens!

Examples

  • Testing if plants grow faster in sunlight than in shade.

  • Asking why some objects sink and others float in water.

In a Nutshell

Scientific inquiry is how we ask questions and learn about the world.
