Understanding Place Value

What Is Place Value?

Place value means knowing what each digit in a number stands for. In the number 42, the '4' is in the tens place and the '2' is in the ones place.

Why Place Value Matters

Place value helps you read, write, and understand bigger numbers. It makes math easier when you know which number is bigger or smaller.

Breaking Down Numbers

  • Tens: The first digit from the right tells you how many groups of ten there are.
