About Me

I am a former professor of anthropology with more than 20 years of experience teaching and researching in Latin America. I am eager to work with students to help them achieve their personal goals and realize their full intellectual potential. I am fluent in Spanish and have taught students in Peru. I also published peer reviewed papers in Spanish. In addition to Spanish language skills, I am also an experienced and published writer. My papers have appeared in high profile venues like the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science and the Proceedings of the Royal Society. I am particularly motivated to help students develop writing skills.

Q&A with Nathan

My teaching philosophy is informed by Paulo Freire's "critical pedagogy." This is an educational philosophy that links the identification of issues to positive action for change and development. The educational process is never neutral. Individuals can be either passive recipients of knowledge or they can engage in a problem-posing approach in which they become active participants. Consistent with critical pedagogy, I firmly adhere to the philosophy that effective learning entails active participation and collaboration by both student and teacher.
