As a student at Virginia Tech, I set out to break the stereotype of the socially awkward technology nerd by majoring in communication and obtaining minors in both math and computer science. After graduating, I chose to teach for a few years in schools that primarily served students in low-income communities through the Teach For America program. This program took me far away from the Virginia home I grew up in all the way to Hawai'i where I worked as a 7th grade math and science teacher. In my second year there, I led my students to pass the standardized math test at a rate 15% higher than the state average! I eventually moved to St. Louis to be with my wife and continued to work in the classroom. Come June, I will be changing careers, but I still want teaching to be a part of my life - that's why I chose to become a part of Varsity Tutors!I'm most passionate about helping students get excited about math and computer science by helping them defeat their fear of numbers. Numbers make up a language just like any other, and it can be intimidating when you don't know the vocabulary and how the pieces fit together. Once you have a solid grasp on the foundations, everything starts to fall into place, and math quickly becomes an exciting challenge, instead of a frustrating obstacle.

I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis this past December with a major in Chemistry (Biochemistry track) and minor in Spanish. I have tutored in Calculus III and General Chemistry in college, and I tutored in AP Calc and Spanish in high school. As a premed student currently in the medical school application process and science major, I can tutor in a variety of premed college courses, high school AP and regular science courses, SAT test prep, and MCAT sections. One of my favorite subjects to tutor in is Chemistry as I have taken many courses in the subject and really enjoy it. When tutoring, I like to emphasize understanding of key concepts through practical applications and I like to converse with the student ahead of time to see what learning style works best for them. When I'm not tutoring, I like to read, bake, practice yoga, cook, watch TV, and I recently started knitting!

Conversational Mandarin Tutor • +5 Subjects

I am certified in the highest level of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK level 6) and have lived in China for over three years. I have studied Chinese language and culture for the last seven years and have extensive personal experiences and interests in the culture. My approach to teaching Mandarin Chinese is to start with what most Chinese teachers skip over: fundamentals. I emphasize the need to teach the fundamentals of grammar to allow an easier, clearer, and more natural progression in learning language and building new skills. I also believe that culture and language are inseparable and am especially interested in Chinese folk opera, history, and the development of language and culture over time. Since my study has been done in Northern China, my Mandarin accent is very standard and I'm also very knowledgeable about local expressions in addition to standard Mandarin. I am an American who has put a lot of time and effort into studying Chinese so I am extremely patient and understanding with students and know how to explain Mandarin Chinese in a way that could help anyone.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Washington University in St. Louis working towards a Bachelors degree in Spanish. Over the years, I have volunteered as a tutor with various organizations, including the Refugee Empowerment Program in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Collegebound program that is part of Washington Universitys main tutoring initiative, Each One Teach One. In college, I have also taught ESL. In my experience working with students in elementary through high school and even with graduate students, I have found that students learn best and are more motivated to take on challenges in environments in which they feel comfortable enough to make mistakes. I believe that patience and compassion are key in creating an academic environment in which students can excel. Independent thinking is also extremely crucial; it is important to recognize multiple approaches to learning and problem-solving and to be able to think critically and form ones own opinions. I tutor Spanish, English as a Second Language, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Test Prep in the Reading and Writing sections. My personal favorite is writing; as an avid reader and writer, I appreciate the power of words and the beauty of language. Outside of academics, I am a deep lover of music. I also enjoy reading, writing, drawing, and exploring different creative outlets.

I am a graduate of Oberlin College, where I primarily studied Spanish, Creative Writing, and History. I am currently planning to enter law school, and I enjoy writing novels on the side.I have experience teaching and tutoring in both Spanish and English. I have worked as a high school Spanish teacher's assistant, an elementary school Spanish instructor, a high school writing coach, and an adult language learner ESL teacher.I believe in turning students into teachers--helping learn the subject matter well enough that they feel comfortable explaining it to another person. I'm always eager to work with an individual student to develop a teaching and studying approach that caters to that student's individual strengths and needs. I believe patience, understanding and a positive, friendly tutor-student relationship is the key to quality learning.

I am a patient and effective tutor with a wide variety of experiences and interests. Right out of high school, I spent about 6 years in the Army National Guard where I learned to lead and interact with many different kinds of people in varied situations. After receiving my degree in Nutrition and Fitness from the University of Missouri - Columbia, I finished my contract with the Army and then spent a few years developing hands-on skills as a small scale organic farmer. To compliment my gardening and farming projects, I have also decided to pursue additional education in the medical field. I am in the process of looking for nursing programs and acquiring a second Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Currently the subjects I am tutoring are science-related - Chemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy & Physiology to name a few. Because of my current endeavors in the medical field, these subjects are fresh! I am able to explain them to students in a fluent and straightforward way to make our sessions enjoyable and successful. A little more info about myself: I really love music and enjoy listening to and playing a variety of genres including Rock, Funk and Blues. I have instructed guitar and electric bass for the past 3-4 years on a one on one basis. My tutoring style is based on consistent interaction and dialogue between myself and the student (I will not be lecturing for long periods!), with me asking questions to determine where the student is struggling, and how I can help them the most. I try to focus on core principles underlying the material which will enable someone to learn for themselves, and apply what they have learned to other contexts. It is an exciting and powerful experience when knowledge in one area enhances the study of another. I am a kind and understanding person and my number one goal is to see my students learn!
