Why Do Authors Write?

Authors write for different reasons, such as to inform, persuade, or entertain.

How to Figure Out the Author's Purpose

  • Look at the type of writing (story, article, letter).
  • See if the author is trying to teach, convince, or amuse you.
  • Find words that show feelings or opinions.

Real-World Example

When you read a comic strip, the author’s purpose is usually to entertain you. When you read instructions, the purpose is to inform.
