Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR

Saving Lives with BLS and CPR

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation of emergency care, focusing on maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation without advanced equipment. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a critical BLS skill.

BLS Actions

  • Chest Compressions: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
  • Rescue Breaths: Give breaths using a pocket mask or BVM.
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED): Use to restore normal heart rhythm in cardiac arrest.

Real-World Applications

Quick, effective CPR and early defibrillation can double or triple a cardiac arrest patient’s chance of survival.

Examples

  • Performing CPR on a person who collapsed at a sports event.

  • Applying an AED to a patient in cardiac arrest at a shopping mall.

In a Nutshell

BLS and CPR keep oxygen flowing to the brain and organs during cardiac emergencies.
