Working with Fractions
Pieces of the Whole
Fractions show parts of a whole. Imagine sharing a pizza—each slice is a fraction!
What’s a Fraction?
A fraction has two parts:
- Numerator (top): How many parts you have.
- Denominator (bottom): How many equal parts altogether.
So, \( \frac{3}{4} \) means 3 out of 4 equal parts.
Comparing and Using Fractions
- To compare fractions, make the denominators the same.
- To add or subtract, the parts must be equal-sized.
Why Fractions Matter
Fractions are used in recipes, sharing, measuring, and even telling time!
Key Formula
\[\frac{a}{b}\]
Examples
Eating 2 out of 8 slices of pizza is \( \frac{2}{8} \) or \( \frac{1}{4} \) of the pizza.
Measuring half a cup of milk for pancakes.
In a Nutshell
Fractions help us understand parts of a whole.
