In our town, the public library offers much more than shelves of books. While it does lend thousands of new and classic novels and has quiet reading corners, it also provides tools and classes that serve the whole community. Anyone with a free library card can use high-speed Wi-Fi and computers to write resumes, research school projects, or video chat with relatives. Last year, more than 700 people attended the library's coding and job-search workshops. Children come for story time, and teens meet in the makerspace to design 3-D prints. The library even loans things like sewing machines and ukuleles. During tax season, trained volunteers help adults fill out forms. Although the shelves are neatly arranged by genre, the busiest spots are often the computer lab and community room. The library's calendar is packed with events, showing that it is a hub for learning and help, not just a place for books.

Bees do more than buzz from flower to flower; they help put food on our tables. Many crops, such as apples, almonds, and blueberries, need bees to move pollen so fruits can grow. Scientists estimate that about one out of every three bites of food we eat depends on pollinators like bees. A single honeybee can visit thousands of blossoms in a day, spreading pollen as it goes. Farmers know this, so they sometimes rent hives during bloom time, and crop yields rise when bees are active. Beekeepers care for colonies that live in waxy hives and wear special suits to protect themselves while working. Bees also make honey, which many people think tastes sweet and delicious. While honey is a treat, the real gift bees give is pollination, which helps produce much of the food we enjoy.
