Outcomes, not lecture notes.
Identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in three- and four-sound words (e.g., /v/-/e/-/t/ in "vet")
Segment spoken words into individual phonemes using the "Break It On Down" method
Blend isolated sounds together to form complete, recognizable words
Decode consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words like "wet," "tip," and "mop" with accuracy and confidence
Expand phonemic awareness to four-phoneme words like "skip"
Recite and sequence the alphabet at varying speeds to build letter fluency and recall
Distinguish between similar-sounding phonemes through focused auditory discrimination practice
Apply kinesthetic techniques — like tapping sounds out on your arm — to reinforce sound-blending skills

Rocking & Reading turns the science of phonics into a full-on musical experience for early learners. Students rap the alphabet, tap out sounds on their arms, and "break it on down" through songs and movement that make decoding feel less like schoolwork and more like a jam session. Each session builds essential phonemic awareness skills — identifying, segmenting, and blending the individual sounds inside words like "vet," "skip," and "mop" — laying the groundwork for confident, independent reading. This course is perfect for young readers who need a strong phonics foundation and learn best when their whole body is in on the action.
What Is Rocking & Reading? Rocking & Reading is a phonics-based early literacy course that fuses music, movement, and proven decoding strategies into one high-energy classroom experience. Designed for young learners who are just beginning to crack the code of reading, this course treats every letter and sound like a beat in a song — something to feel, hear, and perform, not just memorize. Students don't sit passively and listen; they rap, tap, move, and shout out sounds together in a way that makes the fundamentals of phonics genuinely stick.
Building the Foundation: Alphabet and Phoneme Awareness Every session starts with the building blocks. Students master the alphabet through rhythmic recitation and ABC rapping exercises performed at different speeds — slow, medium, fast — training their brains to recall letter order automatically and fluently. From there, the focus sharpens to individual phonemes: the distinct sounds that make up spoken words. Students learn to isolate and identify sounds in the beginning, middle, and ending positions of words, developing the auditory discrimination skills that are essential for accurate reading and spelling.
The "Break It On Down" Method The heart of this course is the "Break It On Down" approach — a signature segmenting and blending routine delivered through song and movement. Students practice pulling words apart into their individual sounds (/s/-/k/-/i/-/p/ for "skip") and then snapping them back together into whole words. A key kinesthetic tool: tapping each sound out on the arm, giving students a physical anchor for each phoneme. This multi-sensory technique reinforces what the ears hear and what the voice produces, making sound-symbol relationships feel concrete and intuitive rather than abstract.
From Three Sounds to Four: Progressing Through Complexity Students begin with three-phoneme consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words — "vet," "wet," "tip," "mop" — before advancing to four-phoneme words like "skip." This intentional progression ensures that every learner builds confidence with simpler patterns before tackling greater complexity. Along the way, students also sharpen their auditory discrimination skills, learning to tell apart similar-sounding phonemes and catch subtle differences between words — a critical skill for both reading accuracy and spelling.
Why This Approach Works Rocking & Reading is built on multi-sensory learning: every concept is delivered through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic channels at once. Songs and rhythms engage musical memory. Movement activities like arm-tapping connect abstract sounds to physical experience. Interactive games and peer participation keep energy and focus high. The result is a classroom where early readers feel safe to try, make mistakes, and try again — building not just phonics skills, but genuine confidence. By the end of the course, students can segment and blend words on their own, decode simple CVC words, and approach new words with the tools and courage to figure them out.
