Fractions don't have to be frustrating — and this course proves it. Fun-damentals of Fractions, Multiplication, & Division is a hands-on, interactive course designed for students who want to build real confidence working with fractions from the ground up. Students will move from understanding what a numerator and denominator actually mean, all the way through multiplying and dividing fractions, converting mixed numbers, and tackling real-world word problems. Along the way, engaging visuals, games, and relatable examples (yes, including pizza) make the math click in a way that sticks. Whether your student is meeting fractions for the first time or needs to shore up the fundamentals before moving on to more advanced math, this course gives them the tools — and the confidence — to succeed.
What This Course Is About Fun-damentals of Fractions, Multiplication, & Division is exactly what it sounds like: a course that takes the fundamentals seriously and makes them genuinely fun. Fractions are one of the most important — and most misunderstood — topics in middle school math. They show up everywhere: in algebra, geometry, science, cooking, and personal finance. This course builds the strong foundation students need to handle fractions with confidence, no matter where they encounter them next.
Who It's For This course is designed for students who are working on fractions for the first time or who want to go back and truly master the concepts before moving forward. Cohorts may include students at a range of levels, and the instruction is designed to meet students where they are — reinforcing the basics for some while challenging others to push deeper into operations and applications.
Key Concepts Covered The course moves through fraction skills in a logical, building-block sequence:
- Fraction Fundamentals: Students start by understanding what a fraction actually represents — a part of a whole or a part of a group — and get fluent with vocabulary like numerator, denominator, proper fraction, and improper fraction. Visual models like fraction bars, shapes, and arrays make abstract ideas concrete.
- Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions: Students learn to move fluidly between mixed numbers and improper fractions, mastering the multiply-the-denominator-then-add-the-numerator method and applying it to real problems.
- Equivalent Fractions and Simplifying: Students discover how to find equivalent fractions using multiplication and division, and how to reduce fractions to their simplest form — a critical skill before performing any operation.
- Adding and Subtracting Fractions: From combining fractions with the same denominator to finding common denominators when they differ, students build the skills to add and subtract fractions cleanly and accurately, including in multi-step word problems.
- Multiplying and Dividing Fractions: Students learn to multiply fractions by fractions and by whole numbers, understanding what it means to find "a fraction of a fraction." Division is demystified through the concept of reciprocals — flip and multiply — with plenty of practice to make it automatic.
How It's Taught This is a live, interactive course — not a lecture. Students are actively solving problems, responding in real time, earning XP for correct answers, and working through challenges that make the math feel like a game rather than a chore. Visual aids, real-world scenarios (recipes, measurements, discounts), and step-by-step problem-solving strategies keep every session engaging and purposeful. The goal isn't just to follow steps — it's to understand why the steps work.
What Students Walk Away With By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently read, write, compare, and operate on fractions in all their forms. They'll know how to approach a fraction word problem without freezing up, how to check their work, and how to connect fraction skills to the math they'll encounter in school and in everyday life. Most importantly, they'll have shed the idea that fractions are hard — and replaced it with real, earned confidence.
