When to Apply and Early Application

CalTech operates on a regular decision application deadline for most applicants. The regular decision deadline is typically in early January, with admissions decisions released in late March. CalTech also offers Restrictive Early Action (REA), which is a non-binding early admissions process for students who are confident that Caltech is their first-choice university. REA applications are due in early November and applicants will be notified of the admission decision by mid-December.

Application Requirements:

To apply to CalTech, you will need to submit the following materials:

  • Application: CalTech accepts the Common Application, Coalition Application, or Questbridge Application. You can choose either platform to complete your application.
  • School Report: This is a document that your high school college counselor will send to Caltech that provides context about your school. You can request your counselor complete it through all 3 application platforms. Additionally, your counselor will submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
  • Application Fee or Fee Waiver: A non-refundable application fee of $75 is required, but CalTech offers fee waivers for eligible students who demonstrate financial need.
  • High School Transcripts: Submit official transcripts that reflect your academic performance throughout high school.
  • Standardized Test Scores: CalTech has adopted a test-optional policy, meaning that submitting SAT or ACT scores is not required. However, if you believe your scores are a strong reflection of your abilities, you can choose to submit them.
  • Letters of Recommendation: CalTech requires two letters of recommendation from teachers who can speak to your academic abilities, personal qualities, and potential for success at the university.
  • Personal Statement and Short Answers: Craft a compelling personal statement that showcases your unique qualities, experiences, and aspirations. CalTech also requires short answers to specific questions that demonstrate your interest and fit with the university.

Additional Requirements and Considerations

For International Students: English Proficiency Exam scores are required of all international applicants unless your native language is English or English is the primary language of instruction in your secondary school. CalTech accepts the Duolingo English Test (DET), IELTS, or the TOEFL. The English proficiency exam must be taken prior to the application deadline.
