I knew I wanted to be an English teacher since 7th grade. I had an amazing middle school English teacher, Mr. Ross, who inspired my love of reading and writing; I also had really cool and creative teachers in high school. I then tutored peers in college, so I knew I wanted to help people. Teaching a...

I'm 20 years old. My first language was Spanish but I mostly speak English in my day-to-day life. I speak and write in both languages fluently. I'm in my third year of college, I'm double majoring in Computer Science and Sociology at the University of New Mexico. I'll be honest, I'm not as professional of a tutor as I wish I was. I'm used to tutoring Freshmen in college for their finals so I'm more comfortable with a "friendship" vibe with students. I like when people see me as more of a friend that's helping them on their homework or an older brother teaching them about something new. I taught kids (6-12 years old) how to make video games at my last job, it was pretty cool. I wanted to become a tutor now though because when I was taking my beginning classes in Computer Science a few years back I thought "wow this is an easy concept to understand if this teacher didn't suck and knew how to explain things without trying to act so smart." I like making things as simple as possible and I like when people explain what other people think are "easy things" because I'll understand harder things better. If you're like me, I'm your tutor. I'm a very chill guy so let's hang out and work on some homework or get you ready for the ACT! I love math, reading, and science. I'm also a great writer. My college application letters got me into 11 colleges all over the country, 3 of them private.

I grew up in a small town that didn’t even have a high school. Some of us had the resources to drive, but many of my friends and I depended on the county to bus us almost an hour across the desert to get to school every morning. I’d sit on the torn leather seats with a book over my knees, a scratch paper and pencil and study because I knew education was the best means of pursuing my dreams. Mentors and teachers invested in me, seeing beyond my socioeconomic barriers and fanning my potential in flame. My peers that grew up down the road became my learning community, and together we worked for a better life. Now, my Bachelor’s degree in Biology hangs on my wall, and I am pursuing a career in nursing at the University of New Mexico. I am passionate about passing down what I have learned. To encourage lifelong, autonomous learning, to instill passion in others treading a similar path, and to forge the confidence required to tackle the challenging demands of higher education is ultimately my goal as a tutor. I put my students and their needs first, and I am willing to teach in any personalized style that will yield the best result for that student. I know practical methods to teach students in auditory, visual, or kinesthetic styles. I am fluent in Spanish and well trained in molecular biology, physiology, and mathematics, but I still enjoy pursuing other hobbies such as multimedia artwork, soccer and the outdoors. I hope to help any student get one step closer to achieving their dreams.

My fascination with human behavior, motivations behind human actions, and governmental actions has existed for most of my life, to determine of cause of this I would accredit it to the War on Drugs and my volunteer work with the general public. I am truly astonished by the level marginalization that many people in our country experience on a daily basis. It has been an emotive and enriching experience to study and engage with individuals outside of typical social norms. There have been a number of factors I have identified that lead to the realm of addiction; individual experience such as a breakdown in relationships, immigration, decline of mental or physical health, employment and more often a combination of all of the above: but also group experience which includes the feeling of acceptance, belonging, and a fear of being alone or rejectedwhich ends up happening due to the way in which we present addiction to the general public. I was adamant from then on to continue to try to make a difference in this world, to raiseawareness of, and support those who are marginalized, discriminated against, stigmatized and misunderstood. My Anthropology degree has developed my understanding of people culturally through ethnographic research and natural observation. Alongside my History degree, which allows me to understand the evolution of addiction and marginalizationas well as to fully grasp why it is that governments aim to systematically marginalize specific people. As a tutor, aide, and friend it is my mission to help individuals gain their own understandings of material and relate it to everyday life. By doing this I aim to help people think more critically of information being presented and therefore allow them to master material without even realizing that is what they are doing. Therefore, I am helping individuals not only learn material for the 'right now' but also gain the ability to apply that material in 'real-life' for the 'later'.

I hold teaching licenses in both New Mexico and California. I have 20 years of teaching experience in both the classroom and tutoring environments. My teaching and tutoring assignments have been varied, ranging from working in a combination 4-6 classroom, high school classrooms involving multiple subjects, and adults studying ESL. I have also been guiding students in preparing for the GED exam since it's new format in January 2014. By working with such a varied age population in various subjects, I have learned to work with students with different and unique learning styles and processing skills. This allows me to target the specific areas of need with each of my students in order to find the most effective way to present material so they will be successful in meeting their challenges. After only six months in my previous teaching job, I was awarded "Employee of the Month" as a result of my hard work and dedication to my students. I am skilled in making a personal connection with all of my students and together we always find a way to work as a team to meet each one's individual goals. I really look forward to helping guide your student on a path to future successes.

I am currently attending Austin Community College and planning on transferring to a 4 year university to achieve a bachelors in chemical engineering after spring semester. Math was once a subject I dreaded on taking having this pre-conceptual thought since high school that I was bad at it, I put it off as long as possible in college. After taking some really hard classes like organic chemistry I had learned that if you go into a class thinking your bad at, that attitude will ultimately reflect on your grade. So there I was going into intermediate algebra with a changed mindset and the grade highly reflected that. Ever since that I have enjoyed math classes. Math is a difficult subject even for me moving up the ladder. Understanding concepts takes time, a lot of time and it can be frustrating. I know the struggle. I have been helping classmates from the beginning of my math career up to now. Given the opportunity to be a supplemental instructor for a college algebra class (the highest dropped class at ACC) it has really made me appreciate spreading the knowledge. Helping students go from D's and C's to A's and B's. The feeling of being able to help someone with a topic I once had difficulty with is indescribable. That is what ultimately led me to reach out to other tutoring positions such as varsity tutors. To spread the knowledge and to relay a positive message to fellow students or anyone looking to understand a difficult subject.Subjects I tutor,Algebra 1Algebra 2TrigonometryCalculus 1
