On a number line, greater numbers are to the right. $-2$ is to the right of $-5$, and $|-2|=2<5=|-5|$, so $-2>-5$.

Negatives reverse everything, so you always flip any inequality even if numbers change.

They are both negative, so they are equal.

$-5$ is greater because subtraction makes numbers larger.
