Why Did the Author Write This?

Every passage is written for a reason. Is the author trying to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain something? That’s the author’s purpose! The author’s tone is their attitude toward the subject, which can be serious, funny, excited, or even sarcastic.

How to Figure It Out

  • Look for clue words (like “unfortunately” or “amazingly”).
  • Think about what the author wants you to feel or learn.
  • Notice if the author is presenting facts, telling a story, or making an argument.
