Guessing and Elimination Strategies

Make Every Answer Count

There’s no penalty for wrong answers on the PSAT, so never leave a question blank! Use elimination to cross out obviously wrong choices, then make your best guess from what remains. Often, you can spot patterns or unreasonable answers to narrow it down.

How to Eliminate

  • Look for answers that are too high or too low.
  • Watch for units or signs that don’t match the question.
  • Check if plugging in an answer makes sense in the original problem.

Examples

  • Crossing out two choices that don't make sense, then guessing between the remaining answers.

  • Plugging in answer choices to see which one fits the equation.
