Practical Applications

Scaling and Map Reading

Navigating the World with Math

Maps use scales to show real distances in a smaller, manageable way. Understanding scale helps you calculate actual distances between places.

What is a Scale?

A map scale might say 1 inch = 10 miles. That means every inch you measure on the map equals 10 miles in real life.

  • If two cities are 3 inches apart on the map, they're \( 3 \times 10 = 30 \) miles apart.

Using Math in Navigation

  • Planning a road trip? Use the map scale to estimate travel distance.
  • Reading blueprints or models? Scaling helps builders create accurate plans.

Examples

  • A park is shown as 2 inches from your house on the map. If the scale is 1 inch = 5 miles, the park is 10 miles away.

  • A model car is built at a 1:20 scale. If the real car is 200 inches long, the model is 10 inches long.
