MAP 3rd Grade Math

A comprehensive math course designed for third grade students to build foundational skills in numbers, operations, geometry, and data analysis.

Advanced Topics

Fractions and Their Uses

Understanding Fractions

Fractions show parts of a whole. When you split a pizza into 4 equal slices, each slice is \( \frac{1}{4} \) of the pizza.

Parts of a Fraction

  • The top number is called the numerator (it tells how many parts you have).
  • The bottom number is called the denominator (it tells how many parts the whole is split into).

Comparing and Using Fractions

You will learn to compare fractions like \( \frac{1}{2} \) and \( \frac{1}{4} \), and to find fractions on a number line.

Fractions Around Us

Fractions are everywhere—slicing apples, measuring ingredients, or sharing candy.

Key Formula

\[\frac{a}{b}\]

Examples

  • Shade \( \frac{2}{3} \) of a rectangle.

  • Which is bigger: \( \frac{3}{4} \) or \( \frac{2}{4} \)?

In a Nutshell

Fractions are equal parts of a whole, like slices of a pizza.

Key Terms

Fraction
