HSPT Quantitative

A comprehensive exploration of quantitative reasoning skills tested on the HSPT, including problem-solving, number concepts, and data analysis.

Basic Concepts

Basic Operations

Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing

These four operations are the heart of most quantitative problems. Being quick and accurate with these will help you solve problems faster.

Addition & Subtraction

Add or subtract numbers, including negative numbers and decimals.

Multiplication & Division

Multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Remember your multiplication tables—they come in handy!

Order of Operations

When a problem has more than one operation, use PEMDAS:

  • Parentheses
  • Exponents
  • Multiplication and Division (left to right)
  • Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

Everyday Uses

Whether budgeting your allowance, splitting a pizza, or figuring out how many hours you need to study, these operations are everywhere.

Examples

  • Calculate \( 7 - 4 \times 2 = 7 - 8 = -1 \).

  • Divide 24 by 6: \( 24 \div 6 = 4 \).

In a Nutshell

Solid skills in the four basic operations help you solve math problems with confidence.
