Question

Solve the system of equations.

4x+3y=7

7x-14y=21

Tap to reveal answer

Answer

Let's first look at the 2nd equation. All three terms in 7x-14y=21 can be divided by 7. Then x-2y=3 We can isolate x to get x=3+2y

Now let's plug x=3+2y into the 1st equation, 4x+3y=7:

4left ( 3+2y right )+3y=7

12+8y+3y=7

11y=-5

y=\frac{-5}{11}$ Now let's plug our y-value into x=3+2y to solve for y:

x=3+2leftleft ( $\frac{-5}{11}$ right )=3-$\frac{10}{11}$=\frac{33}{11}$-$\frac{10}{11}$=\frac{23}{11}$

So x=\frac{23}{11}$and y=\frac{-5}{11}$
