Why Do We Need Big Numbers?
Long ago, people only needed to count small things like animals or apples. But as towns grew bigger, they needed to count hundreds of things! Imagine trying to count all the people in your school one by one. It would take forever!
Numbers like 100, 200, and 300 help us count big groups quickly. Instead of saying "one hundred separate things," we can just say "one hundred" and everyone knows exactly how many we mean!

Pattern Recognition
A hundreds number is a special number that has only hundreds in it. Think of 300 as three groups of 100 things each. The number 300 means we have three hundreds and zero tens and zero ones.
Seeing Hundreds Numbers
In the picture above, you can see that hundreds numbers are made of groups of 100. When we have 200, we really have two groups of 100. When we have 300, we have three groups of 100. This makes counting big numbers much easier!
The Math Behind Hundreds
Every hundreds number follows a simple pattern. The first digit tells us how many hundreds we have. The zeros in the tens and ones places tell us there are no extra tens or ones.
Hundreds on a Number Line
The number line helps us see that hundreds numbers are evenly spaced. From 100 to 200 is the same distance as from 200 to 300. This is because we're always adding exactly 100 each time we move to the next hundreds number.
| Hundreds Number | How Many Groups of 100 | Words |
|---|---|---|
100 | 1 group | one hundred |
200 | 2 groups | two hundred |
300 | 3 groups | three hundred |
400 | 4 groups | four hundred |
500 | 5 groups | five hundred |

Patterns in Hundreds Numbers
| Pattern Type | What It Shows | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Skip Counting | Each number is 100 more | 100, 200, 300, 400 |
| Place Value | First digit shows hundreds | 500 has 5 in hundreds place |
| Zero Pattern | Always ends in 00 | All end with two zeros |
Hundreds numbers follow special patterns that make them easy to recognize. They always end in two zeros, and the first digit tells us exactly how many hundreds we have. This makes counting and comparing much easier!
Beyond 900: What Comes Next?
| Number Range | What We Call It | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 100–900 | Hundreds | 400 (four hundred) |
| 1000 | One Thousand | 1000 (ten hundreds!) |
| 1000+ | Thousands | 2000, 3000, 4000 |
After 900 comes 1000, which is one thousand. This is like having 10 groups of 100! When we understand hundreds, thousands become much easier to learn. We use the same patterns, just with bigger groups.

Hundreds Numbers Summary
Hundreds numbers are special numbers like 100, 200, 300, up to 900. They help us count big groups quickly by grouping things into sets of 100. The first digit tells us how many hundreds we have, and the two zeros show there are no tens or ones.
When we count by hundreds, we add 100 each time: 100, 200, 300, 400. This creates an even pattern on the number line. Understanding hundreds makes it easier to work with big numbers and prepares us for learning about thousands later!
