There are 60 tiny tick marks around the edge of a clock. Each tick mark stands for 1 minute. When the minute hand moves from one tick to the next, one minute has passed.

Skip Counting by 5s

The big numbers (1–12) are spaced 5 tick marks apart. So you can count by 5s — 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 — to quickly find the minutes.

This clock shows 3:42. Let's see how we figure that out! The short pink hand (the hour hand) has passed the 3 but hasn't reached the 4 yet, so the hour is 3. The long cyan hand (the minute hand) is between the 8 and the 9. The 8 stands for 40 minutes. We count 2 more tiny tick marks past the 8, so that gives us 42 minutes.

Notice the blue numbers around the outside of the clock. They show you the skip-count by 5s pattern — :05, :10, :15, :20, and so on. This is your shortcut! First skip-count to the nearest big number, then count the extra tiny ticks one at a time.

How to Read Time to the Nearest Minute

Here is a simple 3-step method you can use every time you look at a clock with hands.

Step 1 — Find the Hour

Look at the short hand. Which number did it just pass? That is the current hour. Remember: the hour hand moves very slowly. Between two numbers, it's still the earlier hour.

Step 2 — Skip Count by 5s

Look at the long hand. Find the big number it is closest to (or has just passed). Start at the 12 and count by 5s around the clock until you reach that number. Each big number equals 5 minutes:

Start at the earlier time. Count forward in chunks you're comfortable with — maybe by 10s, then by 5s, then by 1s — until you reach the later time. Add up all your hops.

Method 2 — Subtract

If both times share the same hour, you can subtract the starting minutes from the ending minutes. For example: 2:50 − 2:20 means 50 − 20 = 30 minutes.

In this number line, we found the time from 1:15 to 1:42. We hopped +10, +10, +5, and +2. Adding those up: 10 + 10 + 5 + 2 = 27 minutes. You can also check with subtraction: 42 − 15 = 27. Both methods give the same answer!
