The Story of Counting
People have been counting for a very, very long time! Long before there were schools or books, people needed to count things like sheep, fish, and seeds. At first, they used their fingers. But what happens when you have more than 10 things? You need a smarter way to count!
Over many years, people all around the world came up with tricks to count faster. One of the best tricks is called skip-counting. Instead of counting one by one, you skip numbers and jump ahead. Let's look at how counting grew up over time.
The big question is: How do we count all the way to 1,000 without it taking forever? That's exactly what skip-counting helps us do!

Before we start counting, let's learn four important ideas. These ideas are like rules of the game that make skip-counting work.

See It on a Number Line
A number line is a long line with numbers on it. It helps us see how skip-counting works. Look at the picture below. The little hops show you how we jump by 5s from 0 all the way to 50!
See the little rainbow-colored hops? Each hop is a jump of +5. We start at 0 and hop to 5, then to 10, then to 15, and so on. Every time we land, the number ends in a 5 or a 0. That's the pattern!
Now look at counting by 10s. The hops are even bigger!
When you count by 10s, every number ends in 0. That makes it easy to spot the pattern. And look β it only took 10 hops to get all the way to 100!
How Skip-Counting Works
Skip-counting is like adding the same number again and again. When you count by 5s, you keep adding 5. When you count by 10s, you keep adding 10. When you count by 100s, you keep adding 100. Let's see this clearly.
Here are some helpful patterns to remember:
When you skip-count by 5s, the ones digit goes: 0, 5, 0, 5, 0, 5β¦ It keeps switching back and forth. When you skip-count by 10s, the ones digit is always 0. The tens digit goes up by 1 each time: 10, 20, 30β¦ When you skip-count by 100s, the ones and tens digits are both always 0. The hundreds digit goes up: 100, 200, 300β¦
The Counting Chart to 1,000
A hundreds chart shows numbers in rows of 10. It makes patterns really easy to see! Below is a chart showing skip-counting from 100 to 1,000 by hundreds. Each row shows what happens when you count by 10s within that hundred.
Look at the chart! Each colored bar is 100 more than the one above it. When we count 100, 200, 300β¦ all the way to 1,000, we only need to say 10 numbers. That's much faster than saying all 1,000 numbers one by one!

Notice something cool? After 10 jumps, counting by 5s reaches 50, counting by 10s reaches 100, and counting by 100s reaches 1,000. Bigger jumps = bigger numbers!
