Let's look at a picture of a unit square and then see how we use it to fill a rectangle. The first diagram shows one unit square all by itself. Each side is 1 unit long.
Now let's see how unit squares fill up a bigger shape. The next diagram shows a rectangle that is 5 units long and 3 units tall. We fill it with unit squares and then count them.
In the diagram above, every small square is a unit square. We counted 15 unit squares, so the rectangle's area is 15 square units. No gaps. No overlaps. That's all there is to it!
How It Works: Counting & a Handy Shortcut
You can always find area by counting every single unit square. But there is a faster way! When you have a rectangle, you can use multiplication.
Why does this work? Look back at the rectangle diagram. There are 5 squares in each row and 3 rows. So you can multiply: 5 × 3 = 15. That's the same answer you get from counting one by one!
This shortcut works for any rectangle. If a rectangle is 8 units long and 4 units wide, the area is 8 × 4 = 32 square units. You don't have to draw and count all 32 tiny squares!
Comparing Different Shapes
Unit squares help us compare shapes. Which shape has more space inside — a long, skinny rectangle or a short, wide one? Let's find out by counting unit squares for several shapes.
