Now let's see the other direction. What if we cut each circle into equal slices? If we have 4 slices out of 4, we have ALL the slices — that's 1 whole!

How It Works — The Rules

There are two simple rules that make this all work. Let's look at each one.

Rule 1: Whole Number Over 1
any whole number = that number ÷ 1
Put the whole number on top and 1 on the bottom.

This rule says: to write a whole number as a fraction, just put it over 1. That's because dividing by 1 doesn't change anything! For example:
