Practical Applications

Recognizing and Responding to Emergencies

Spotting an Emergency

Being able to recognize when someone needs help is the first step in providing BLS.

Signs of an Emergency

  • Unresponsiveness
  • No normal breathing
  • Choking or gasping for air
  • Sudden collapse

Taking Action

  • Stay calm: Take a deep breath and focus.
  • Check safety: Make sure the scene is safe for you and others.
  • Get help: Call for emergency services or direct someone else to do so.
  • Start BLS: Use your ABC skills to help the victim.

Why Quick Action Matters

The sooner you start BLS, the better the person's chances of survival.

Examples

  • You notice someone isn't moving and isn't breathing, so you call for help and begin BLS.

  • You see a friend choking and respond quickly with the Heimlich maneuver.
