Basic Concepts

In a nutshell: ACT Reading passages come from different genres and require quick comprehension.

## What Makes ACT Reading Passages Unique? The ACT Reading section presents four passages, each with a unique style and topic. These passages test your ability to quickly understand and interpret information from a variety of subjects: prose fiction, social science, humanities, and natural science. ### Types of Passages - **Prose Fiction:** Extracted from novels or short stories, focusing on character, plot, and mood. - **Social Science:** Informative texts on society, history, or economics. - **Humanities:** Essays on art, literature, or philosophy. - **Natural Science:** Scientific explanations or arguments. ## How to Approach Each Passage Skim the passage first to grasp its main idea, then focus on details as you answer questions. Remember, speed and accuracy are both important! ## Why This Matters in Real Life Being able to quickly understand different types of texts is useful not just for the ACT, but also for college classes, work emails, and even reading the news.
