6th Grade Science

Investigating forces, energy, and Earth's place in the universe.

Basic Concepts

Earth’s Place in the Universe

Our Planet and Its Neighborhood

Earth is part of a vast universe filled with stars, planets, and galaxies. We live in the solar system, where the sun is our closest star.

The Solar System

  • The sun is at the center.
  • Eight planets orbit the sun, including Earth.
  • There are also moons, asteroids, and comets.

Why Do We Have Day and Night?

Earth spins on its axis, giving us day and night. When your part of Earth faces the sun, it’s day; when it faces away, it’s night.

The Importance of Earth

Earth is just the right distance from the sun to support life. Its atmosphere protects us and gives us the air we breathe.

Exploring Space

Telescopes and space probes help us learn more about our universe. Astronauts travel beyond our planet to gather information and inspire us to keep exploring!

Understanding our place in the universe helps us appreciate our planet and look for life elsewhere.

Examples

  • The sun rises and sets because Earth spins.

  • We see the moon and stars at night because of Earth's rotation.

In a Nutshell

Earth is a unique planet in the solar system, orbiting the sun with other planets and objects.
