Energy Transformations and Conservation

Energy is Never Lost

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another. This is called the Law of Conservation of Energy.

Examples of Energy Transformations

  • When you eat food, your body changes chemical energy into kinetic energy so you can move.
  • A flashlight changes chemical energy in batteries into light and heat energy.

Why It’s Important

Knowing how energy transforms helps us use energy wisely and invent machines that waste less. Engineers design cars, homes, and gadgets to be energy efficient, saving resources and money.

Quick Fun Fact

Even when you slide down a slide, some energy turns into heat because of friction!

Examples

  • A toaster turns electrical energy into heat to make toast.

  • Plants turn sunlight into food energy through photosynthesis.

In a Nutshell

Energy changes forms but is never lost; it’s always conserved.

Key Terms

Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed in form.
Transformation
The process of changing energy from one form to another.
