Heading into high school geometry without a roadmap? This course changes that. Jump Start to High School Geometry gives students a thorough, confidence-building preview of the core concepts they'll encounter all year — from angle relationships and triangle congruence to the Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles, trigonometry, and circle theorems. Students work through real problems, not just definitions, so they actually practice setting up proportions, applying congruence postulates, and using sine, cosine, and tangent before the school year even starts. Whether you're brand new to these ideas or looking to shore up shaky foundations, this course meets you where you are and moves you forward. Walk into your first day of geometry already knowing the vocabulary, the rules, and — most importantly — how to use them.

SYLLABUS

What This Course Is — and Who It's For

Jump Start to High School Geometry is designed for incoming high school students who want to get ahead of the curve before geometry class officially begins. Rather than waiting to encounter these ideas cold in September, students in this course spend dedicated time working through the exact topics that show up again and again in a standard geometry curriculum. The course is built for a range of starting points — whether a student has seen some of this material before and wants to solidify it, or is encountering these concepts for the very first time.

Angle Relationships and Geometric Reasoning

The course opens with the building blocks of geometric thinking: how angles behave when lines intersect. Students learn to identify and apply vertical angles, alternate interior and exterior angles, and corresponding angles formed when a transversal crosses parallel lines. They practice solving for unknown angle measures in multi-step figures, building the kind of precise logical reasoning that geometric proofs require. From the start, the emphasis is on why rules work — not just memorizing them.

Triangles: Congruence, Similarity, and Classification

A substantial portion of the course is devoted to triangles, one of the most fundamental shapes in all of geometry. Students master the five triangle congruence postulates — SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, and Hypotenuse-Leg — and learn how to apply CPCTC (Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent) as a tool in formal proofs. They also explore similarity through the AA, SSS Similarity, and SAS Similarity theorems, setting up and solving proportions to find missing side lengths in similar figures. Beyond congruence and similarity, students learn to classify triangles as right, acute, or obtuse given only their side lengths, and explore the Triangle Inequality to determine when three side lengths can even form a valid triangle.

Right Triangles and Trigonometry

Right triangles get special attention throughout the course. Students work extensively with the Pythagorean Theorem and then go deeper into the two special right triangle families — 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 — learning to use their fixed side ratios to solve for unknowns quickly and accurately. The course then introduces right triangle trigonometry: defining sine, cosine, and tangent as ratios of side lengths, and applying them to find missing sides and angles. These trig foundations are among the most reused skills in all of high school math, and students leave with real fluency in setting up and solving these problems.

Coordinate Geometry and Circles

The course also covers coordinate geometry essentials — using the distance formula, midpoint formula, and slope to analyze figures on the coordinate plane. Students explore how slope connects to parallel and perpendicular lines, a concept that ties algebra directly to geometry. Rounding out the content, students investigate circle theorems, working with circumference, area, chords, tangents, and secants to solve geometric problems involving circles.
