Simplify and perform arithmetic operations on rational expressions, including identifying variable restrictions
Determine horizontal, vertical, and slant asymptotes of rational functions and use polynomial long division to find linear asymptote equations
Graph rational functions completely by combining asymptote analysis, intercepts, and key behavior

Precalculus Fundamentals isn't about reviewing what you missed — it's about mastering what you covered. Smart, ambitious students adapt by prioritizing what the grade requires — but that rational tradeoff has a cost. The foundational skills in precalculus — trig fluency, rational function analysis, triangle solving — show up again constantly: in calculus derivatives and integrals, on the SAT and ACT, in AP Physics, and beyond. Trigonometry, Inside and Out
A significant portion of this course is devoted to trigonometry, because trig fluency is one of the highest-leverage skills in all of precalculus and calculus. Students deepen their command of all six trig functions — sine, cosine, tangent, and their reciprocals — and practice applying SOH CAH TOA with the kind of speed and accuracy that comes from true understanding, not memorization. From there, the focus expands to the unit circle: relating angles in standard position to coordinates, reading off exact trig values for key angles in both degrees and radians, and using that knowledge to solve trig equations. Students also work through solving equations that involve transformations — horizontal stretches and compressions — and practice finding every valid solution by accounting for a function's full periodicity.
Beyond Right Triangles: Laws of Sines and Cosines
When triangles aren't right-angled, a new toolkit is required. Students build confidence applying the Law of Sines across AAS, ASA, and SSA configurations, including the tricky ambiguous case where SSA can produce two valid triangles, one, or none. The Law of Cosines fills in the rest — handling SSS and SAS scenarios with precision. Inverse trig functions (arcsin, arccos, arctan) become essential tools here, as students use them to recover unknown angle measures from known ratios. These skills connect directly to real-world applications in navigation, surveying, and physics, giving students a vivid sense of what this mathematics actually does.
Rational Expressions and Asymptote Mastery
Rational expressions and rational functions represent some of the most technically demanding material in precalculus — and some of the most commonly under-practiced. Students reinforce their ability to factor, simplify, and perform arithmetic operations on rational expressions, with careful attention to identifying restrictions on variables. The class then moves into graphing rational functions: locating vertical asymptotes by finding zeros of the denominator, determining horizontal asymptotes by comparing degrees of numerator and denominator, and — for cases where the numerator's degree exceeds the denominator's by exactly one — using polynomial long division to identify slant asymptotes. Students build complete, accurate graphs by synthesizing all of this information together.
