What This Course Is — and Who It's For

Jump Start to Algebra 1 is exactly what it sounds like: a focused, energetic course designed to give students a meaningful head start before they encounter Algebra 1 in school. It's built for students who want to feel prepared — not panicked — when variables, equations, and graphs start appearing in their coursework. No prior algebra experience is required, just a willingness to engage and practice. Because this course runs across multiple cohort groups, the pacing and entry point may vary, but every group covers the essential concepts that make Algebra 1 click.

Variables, Expressions, and the Language of Algebra

The course opens by establishing the fundamental vocabulary of algebra — the difference between a term, an expression, and an equation, and why it matters. Students learn to treat variables not as mysterious symbols but as practical placeholders for unknown quantities. From there, the focus shifts to building equations from scratch: reading a word problem, identifying what's known and unknown, defining variables, and writing an equation that models the situation. Real-world contexts — like arcade scoring systems, cost calculations, and rate scenarios — make this concrete and memorable from day one.

Linear Equations, Slope, and Graphing

A major thread throughout the course is linear relationships. Students learn to construct tables of values, identify patterns, and connect those patterns to graphs and equations. Slope is introduced as a rate of change — not just a formula to memorize, but a concept tied to real situations like how fast a cost grows or how far someone travels over time. Students practice finding slope and intercepts from equations, tables, and graphs, and they learn to use linear equations as predictive models — plugging in values to estimate outcomes and interpret what those numbers actually mean.

The Distributive Property and Polynomial Multiplication

Another core focus of the course is the distributive property and polynomial operations — skills that show up constantly in Algebra 1 and beyond. Students start by distributing a single term across a polynomial, paying careful attention to negative signs and coefficients. They then move into multiplying two binomials using three different methods:

  • FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) — a reliable mnemonic for keeping track of all four products
  • The Box Method — a visual grid that organizes each term-by-term multiplication clearly
  • The Distributive Method — applying distribution twice to work through binomial multiplication step by step

Students practice combining like terms after each multiplication to arrive at fully simplified polynomial expressions, and get a preview of factoring as the reverse process of distribution.
