Slope and Linear Relationships
The course kicks off with slope — one of the most important and most misunderstood ideas in middle school math. Students learn to calculate slope from a graph using rise over run, from two coordinate points using the slope formula, and from an equation written in slope-intercept form. Critically, slope isn't just a number to memorize — students learn to interpret it as a rate of change in real-world contexts, building the kind of number sense that makes later topics (like systems of equations and functions) click much faster.
Functions: What They Are and How to Spot Them
Next, students tackle functions — a concept that trips up a lot of 8th graders because it's taught abstractly. Here, it's made concrete. Using the vending machine analogy (one input, one output — every time), students learn to distinguish functions from general relations across multiple representations: equations, graphs, and tables. They apply the vertical line test to graphs, construct input-output tables for given functions, and explore domain and range. By the time this section wraps up, students can look at any representation and immediately answer: is this a function?
Linear Equations and Slope-Intercept Form
With slope and functions under their belt, students dive into the full power of slope-intercept form: y = mx + b. They learn to read slope and y-intercept directly from an equation, graph lines from scratch using those two values, and work backwards — writing an equation from a graph, from a slope and a point, or from two points. Special cases like horizontal lines (zero slope) and vertical lines (undefined slope) are covered explicitly so students aren't caught off guard. Students also practice converting between forms to reinforce flexibility with linear equations.
Square Roots, Cube Roots, and Number Sense
The course rounds out with square and cube roots — another 8th grade staple that students often meet for the first time in class, without any prior preparation. Students learn these operations as the inverses of squaring and cubing, practice simplifying root expressions, estimate non-perfect root values and place them on a number line, and solve basic equations that involve roots. This section builds the number fluency students need for geometry, the Pythagorean theorem, and beyond.
