Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Maura in Mesa, AZ
The students had two passages to cover today. They were "Luke's Magic Minutes" and "The Surrender." They had to identify strong textual evidence in their responses. They both struggled with empathizing with the character as to how he might have felt at certain points of the story, for the prompt asked, "How do you think Luke feels after the lady said that to him?" After a group discussion, they had a better grasp of the context clues saying what Luke might have felt. For "The Surrender," the scholars understood what happened in the story but their responses lacked clarity. I left notes on where they could improve so they could have stronger and clearer responses.

The student completed a reading exercise about former basketball player Larry Bird. The selection helped the student exercise context clues skills, vocabulary skills, and punctuation skills. On Saturday we will use the assessment reading test guide to prepare him for his reading test next week.

Prior to the session, the student's mother told me that the student's teacher had informed her that the student will not write unless the teacher is sitting with her. Therefore, I decided to determine whether or not the student had difficulty spelling. In order to do so, I would show the student flashcards and have her read the word on the card. After going through all of the words, I called the words to the student and required her to spell them. After that, I required the student to read from the Bob books so that she could practice reading. The student does a great job with sounding out her words.

For this session, we started a new set of passages about dinosaurs and the government. Both students got their shoes. Although their accuracy answering the questions was somewhat low, their behavior was good enough to compensate, because they were able to listen to explanations of the correct answers.

I had three students. -We covered short (written) answers related to reading comprehension passages. -Aside from having to continuously remind students to stay on task, it went well. -Packets were left for teachers to review. -A brief progress report was submitted as well.

English Tutoring review by Clinton in Mesa, AZ
During today's session, we covered a lot of ground. The student had presented me with 2 drafts of his college essays last session, and I had gone through each one and written several remarks and comments to help him improve them. Today, he furnished edited versions of those 2 essays. The essays were written very well, this time around. He also provided me with 3 drafts of new essay topics that he will be using for his college essays. I went through each one and made any necessary comments. Overall, his writing is starting to improve. I see that he is thinking more carefully through his ideas before he puts pen to paper.
