Always Include a Unit

A number without a unit is incomplete. "7" could be 7 feet, 7 seconds, or 7 elephants. The unit tells you what the number is counting or measuring.

A label explains what the number represents. Writing "Area = 36 ft²" is much clearer than writing just "36."

Match Precision to the Situation

Precision means how exact your answer is. Saying a room is 12.347 feet long is too precise for buying carpet, but saying it is "about 12 feet" is enough.

Round Appropriately

Rounding means shortening a number to a chosen place value. The context tells you how many decimal places to keep — money uses 2, distance might use 0 or 1.

The Math Behind Rounding

Rounding is a skill you'll use constantly. Here's the simple rule and then two common situations where precision matters.

ROUNDING RULE
If the digit to the RIGHT of your rounding place is 5 or greater → round UP. If it is 4 or less → round DOWN (keep the digit the same).
Example: Round 8.367 to the tenths place. Look at the hundredths digit (6). Since 6 ≥ 5, round the 3 up to 4. Answer: 8.4
UNIT CONVERSION
New value = Original value × Conversion factor
A conversion factor is a fraction that equals 1, like 12 in / 1 ft. Example: 3 ft × (12 in / 1 ft) = 36 in. The "ft" cancels, and you're left with inches.
PRECISION IN MONEY
Always round money to exactly 2 decimal places (cents).
If a calculator shows $4.5, write $4.50. If it shows $7.836, round to $7.84 (since 6 ≥ 5, round the 3 up).
⚠️ Watch Out!
When a problem says "round to the nearest tenth," it means keep one digit after the decimal point. "Round to the nearest hundredth" means keep two digits. A common mistake is getting confused between the place value names and the number of digits.

Choosing the Right Unit for the Job
