Numbers and Operations

Understanding Numbers

Numbers are the building blocks of mathematics. They come in different types such as whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, and rational numbers. Knowing how to operate with them is essential for all math problems.

Operations and Order

The four main operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The order of operations, often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction), tells you which steps to do first.

Place Value and Number Properties

Every digit in a number has a value depending on its position. Properties like even/odd, prime/composite, and factors/multiples help in solving problems quickly.

Real-World Relevance

Numbers and operations are everywhere: in shopping, cooking, budgeting, and measuring distances. Mastering these basics helps us make informed everyday decisions.

Examples

  • Adding fractions to find a total cost when shopping.

  • Dividing a pizza evenly among friends.

In a Nutshell

Numbers and operations form the foundation of all math, helping us work with quantities and solve problems.
