Every time you hear a commercial, watch a debate, or listen to a classmate's presentation, you need the skill of evaluating arguments.

An argument is a speaker's main position or point of view on a topic. It is the big idea they want you to accept. For example: "Schools should start later in the morning."

A claim is a specific statement the speaker makes to support their argument. One argument can have several claims. Example: "Teens need at least nine hours of sleep."

Evidence

Evidence is the facts, data, examples, or expert opinions a speaker uses to back up their claims. Good evidence is specific and comes from trustworthy sources.

Reasoning

Reasoning is the logical connection between the evidence and the claim. It explains why the evidence supports the claim. Without reasoning, evidence just floats by itself.

To delineate (dee-LIN-ee-ate) means to describe or outline something clearly. In this standard, it means you identify each part of the speaker's argument step by step.

How to Evaluate: Three Key Tests

When you evaluate a speaker's argument, you're really running three tests. Think of yourself as a detective examining the case. Here are the three tests you need to perform every time.

Test 1: Soundness of Reasoning

Soundness means the reasoning makes logical sense. The speaker's thinking should follow a clear path from evidence to conclusion. Ask yourself: Does this conclusion actually follow from what the speaker said? Or did they make a logical leap (a jump in logic that doesn't hold up)?

A speaker says: "My neighbor's dog bit someone, so all dogs are dangerous." This is unsound because one dog's behavior does not prove something about all dogs. The speaker made a logical leap from one example to a huge conclusion.

Test 2: Relevance of Evidence

Relevance means the evidence actually connects to the claim. Sometimes speakers share interesting facts that don't really relate to their point. That's called irrelevant evidence. Ask yourself: Does this evidence actually help prove the claim, or is it just a distraction?

Test 3: Sufficiency of Evidence

Sufficiency means the speaker has provided enough evidence. One small example is usually not enough to prove a big claim. Ask yourself: Has the speaker given me enough proof? Would I need more information before I'm convinced?

Types of Evidence & How to Judge Them

That's a logical leap.

Step 5 — Judge Overall SufficiencyIs there enough evidence overall? The speaker has one strong piece of evidence (the study) but the other two claims are weakly supported. To be more convincing, the speaker would need more studies, expert opinions, or statistics. The evidence is partially relevant but not fully sufficient.
