Analyzing Author's Purpose and Point of View

Why Did the Author Write This?

Every author has a reason for writing—maybe to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain. Understanding the author's purpose helps you see the bigger picture and read more thoughtfully.

Types of Author's Purpose

  • To Inform: Gives you facts or teaches you something.
  • To Persuade: Tries to make you agree or take action.
  • To Entertain: Tells a story or makes you laugh.
  • To Explain: Helps you understand how or why something works.

Point of View

The author’s point of view is how they feel about the topic. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s hidden in the way they present information.

Real-World Connections

Understanding purpose and point of view helps you:

  • Decide if an ad is trying to sell you something.
  • Spot bias in news or social media.
  • Understand different sides of an argument in debates.

Examples

  • Recognizing a commercial is trying to persuade you to buy a new snack.
