A comprehensive exploration of 2nd grade math concepts designed to build strong foundational skills for young learners.

Basic Concepts

Addition and Subtraction

Adding Numbers

Addition is putting groups together to find out how many there are in all. You will add two- and three-digit numbers, using strategies like counting on, making ten, and using place value.

Subtraction

Subtraction is taking away some from a group to see what is left. You will subtract one- and two-digit numbers, including problems where you have to regroup or 'borrow'.

Strategies

  • Draw pictures or use objects to help solve problems.
  • Break numbers apart to make them easier to add or subtract.
  • Solve word problems by thinking about what is being asked.

Why It Matters

Addition and subtraction help you solve everyday problems, like figuring out how many apples are left after snack or how much money you need to buy a toy.

Examples

  • 47 + 25 = 72

  • If you have 38 marbles and give away 9, you have 29 marbles left.

In a Nutshell

Combine or take away numbers to solve problems.
